Melinda Gates hopes hubby Bill’s charitable works will show world his huge heart

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Microsoft tycoon Bill Gates’ wife, Melinda, hopes that her husband’s charitable works will show the world the more caring side of her entrepreneur husband.

It may be worthwhile noting that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has donated 11.6billion dollars to the word’s most needy causes since its inception in 2000.

Bill has donated so much that this year he ceased to be the world’s richest man, after 13 years in the top spot.

Melinda might be having an unparalleled fortune at her fingertips, but she insists on not enjoying her life as a billionaire’s wife.

She has been seen visiting slum areas in India, and embracing prostitutes with AIDS, rather than sunbathing on the deck of a luxury yacht.

Melinda admits that people often find it difficult to understand why she does not just sit back and enjoy the luxury her husband’s wealth affords.

“I can’t imagine doing the cocktail party thing, the dressing-up, all the time. My mom knows that when I’m in India that to get into the slum you go through a garbage dump,” British tabloid The Sun quoted her as saying.

“And she says, ‘You know, Melinda, people can’t understand why you enjoy visiting those places so much’. But I love being in the slums.

“That’s just part of who I am, my background and experience,” she added.

She also revealed that Bill spends more time running the foundation with her ever since he “retired” from the day-to-day running of Microsoft six months ago.

“It’s a very deep connection to be able to work with your spouse on something that your hearts are completely engaged in. I couldn’t think of anything better,” she said.

“Bill just came back from a trip to India with his dad. And the first thing he wanted to do was tell me all the things he’d learnt.

“When I return from Africa, the first person I want to talk to is Bill. I’ll say, ‘Oh my gosh!’ and all these light bulbs go off,” she added.

Melinda hopes that Bill’s work will help the world to see the more caring side of her entrepreneur husband.

The Extras of Mortgage Marketing

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

The concept of mortgage marketing should be pretty simple. If you are in real estate, then you need to do everything that you can to pick up some clients. This should be simple at least. Everyone who’s tried it should know that it is much more difficult in practice.

Part of the problem comes in the extras that happen. You can’t just advertise. You need to reel them into the business. You need to capture the leads that you secure. This could mean a number of things. There are a few automated systems that you can set up to handle your leads and ensure that they stay interested as the days pass. You could also do it the old-fashioned way and call them up yourself. It will depend on just what you like to when you are running your business.

This is just one of the little extras that happen regularly in mortgage loan marketing. If you are trying to bring in new people, then you have to be ready to try some new things and listen to the advice of the experts. You will be happy in the long run and find that it was well worth the minor cost. Your business should be the better for it.

Co-location Server Hosting

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

In business terms co-location which is also called as collocation or co-location is nothing but a group of entities in a single location where as in computing it refers to installing application to run a data in a single process. There are good examples for this co-location such as virtualization, web hosting etc.

Another concept where a single computer can dedicate to your necessities is nothing but dedicated hosting which gives you increase in speed, control and space and is also more flexible than shared hosting. In fact the server administration is usually provided by the hosting company as the add-on service. Regarding operating system dedicated hosting supports any operating service on basis of the particular dedicated server plan.

One of the major advantages of dedicated server hosting is that it has got high powered networks from multiple providers and that is why people often choose this option as outsource. One of the major benefits of dedicated server is reliability because of its cost effective way of using more than one domain and the other major benefit is security which keeps your applications secure unlike a shared web hosting service where there is a chance of making your applications open to see.

Scientists unravel how brain always gets it right

Friday, December 19th, 2008

What does your brain do as soon as you notice a door handle? It is already hard at work, noticing more and more details.

A simple door handle turns into a silver-plated antique-style-door-handle facing-right. Information about the handle also reaches the part of your brain responsible for planning movements, allowing you to turn the handle with your right hand and open the door.

However, this is not necessarily a simple process for the brain. For instance, how do we end up turning the door handle with our right hand, instead of with the other?

During this analysis, the brain is bombarded with a lot of irrelevant information, so it relies on a control system to filter out unnecessary information.

In the visual system, this control mechanism is known as centre surround inhibition (CSI) and it works by activating only the neurons that are required for further action.

In other words, if any extra neurons are turned on, this CSI will shut them off, so that the brain can focus on the relevant information.

Although the CSI system has been well documented it was not known if this type of control mechanism exists in the motor regions of the brain.

Daniel Loach, psychologist from Macquarie University, Sydney and his colleagues conducted a set of experiments to explore inhibitory mechanism in the areas of the brain involved in planning movements.

A group of participants were successively shown two door handles and had to press a left or right button which corresponded to the texture (either wood or metal) of the second handle.

Some of the pairs had both of the handles in the same orientation, in other pairs the two handles would be rotated at varying angles, said a university release.

In addition, the researchers noted which hand was used to make the response - if it was compatible or incompatible with the direction the handle was facing (for example, the right hand was compatible for handles that were facing right).

These results indicate that there is a common mechanism which acts in both perception and movement. These findings also tell us how information travels throughout the brain and how the motor system and visual system interact.

The results were published in the December issue of Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Microsoft opens windows for Indian heritage

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Call it digitisation of heritage. Zoom in and out, and capture India’s diverse heritage using visualisation techniques, to say the least. And with a current research project using multiple forms of media fructifying, perhaps it would be one of the best tamper-proof methods to preserve the history of Indian ancient architectural sites and cultural legacy.

In a collaborative effort, the Centre’s Department of Science and Technology and Microsoft Research India (MSR), along with few academic institutions, are working on India Digital Heritage Project.

“This is a scientific effort to push the boundaries of what media delivers today to the end-user,” says P Anandan, MD, Microsoft Research India. “India has an enormous cultural heritage, and this project explores how this cultural diversity and depth can be presented and preserved using computer science.”

The project seeks to advance research in technologies to present, preserve cultural heritage and monuments of India. It aims to explore the synergistic use of multiple forms of media such as photographs, video and voice to create uniquely compelling 2D and 3D user experiences for the general public. A Programme Advisory and Monitoring Committee (PAMC) has been set up with Ashok Jhunjhunwala of IIT-Madras as chairman.

A pilot project has already been started at an age-old Goddess Andal temple at Srivilliputtur in Tamil Nadu. The research work included a blend of about 6,000 photos and 20 hours of audio.

So what’s next? “We have identified two major national, diverse historical sites and would commence work on these two sites with the first pilot getting through,” Anandan informed. This is part of few more national projects and would be roping in international partners from the Oxford University, France and Belgium.

The India Digital Heritage project consist of three major steps which include data collection or archiving which is a community-based effort and creating the necessary technology to enable the storage and processing of the media; research and creation of tools and technologies to identify and address research issues that arise during the course of the project.

Is there any commercialisation aspect to the research? Indeed there is a business angle. Says Anandan, there is a huge opportunity but difficult to quantify at this juncture. Since a pilot research has been initiated, there is more to grow.

Meanwhile, American Institute of Indian Studies , a consortium of leading US universities, will soon be preparing a database of neglected Islamic monuments in India. AIIS has selected 100 monuments of the Mughal period in Punjab and Haryana.

Racial gap in colon cancer deaths is widening

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

The racial gap in colon cancer death rates is widening, a new report says, and experts partly blame blacks’ lower screening rates and poor access to quality care.

Colon and rectal cancer death rates are now nearly 50 percent higher in blacks than in whites, according to American Cancer Society research being released Monday.

The gap has been growing since the mid-1970s, when colon cancer death rates for the two racial groups were nearly equal.

“We have seen this enormous progress in whites. We could be seeing the same progress in blacks, if we could overcome disparities in access to health care,” said Elizabeth Ward, who oversees surveillance and health policy at the cancer society.

Colorectal cancer is the third leading cancer killer in the United States. About 50,000 Americans will die of the disease this year, the cancer society estimates.

Last month, researchers reported the rate of new cancers in general is inching down and death rates continue to decline in the United States — important good news in the fight against the dreaded disease.

But when it comes to colon cancer, progress has been greater for whites than for blacks, the new report says.

The rate of diagnoses in blacks was about 19 percent higher than it was for whites in 2005, the most recent year for which statistics are available.

The death rate difference was even more pronounced. Among blacks, there were about 25 deaths per 100,000 people, compared to 17 per 100,000 in whites — a 48 percent difference.

The two groups’ death rates were similar until the 1980s when colon cancer began to kill blacks at a higher rate than whites.

Researchers say it’s not clear why black mortality jumped in the 1980s, but it started a gap that continued to widen even after the black rate began to fall again.

Colon cancer deaths can be prevented by early diagnosis through screening and quality care. The screening rate for whites is 50 percent compared to just 40 percent for blacks.

The screening rate for Hispanics is an even-lower 32 percent, but the death rate for Hispanics — fewer than 13 per 100,000 — is lower than it is for whites.

That paradox is not unique to colon cancer: Poorly insured Hispanics have fared better than whites and blacks in several measures of cancer and heart disease.

“It’s a mystery,” said Dr. Daniel Blumenthal, chair of the Morehouse School of Medicine’s Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine.
